The winners of the 2013 Bestappever-Awards for Android have been announced (http://www.bestappever.com/android/awards/2013/).

VCPiconWhile it was not able to claim a gold medal in one of the categories, G5 Entertainment did manage to come on third place in “Best Casual Game” with its bestseller Virtual City Playground (http://www.bestappever.com/android/awards/2013/winner/gmca). G5 Entertainment also received honorable mentions for “Most Addictive Game” with Virtual City Playground, “Best Lead Character” with Fate of the Pharaoh and “Best Game Graphics” with Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden and Dark Arcana: The Carnival.

Nice recognitions for G5, which underline the quality of their games and their popularity among gamers, even on Android / Google Play where the company is still lagging the monetization success it has on iOS, so far. We are eagerly awaiting additional free-to-play games for Google Play.

#G5 Entertainment: Ranking check

20 May

newlogoTime for our weekly ranking check for G5 Entertainment again. We are glad to note that Secret Society continues its success around the world. The game continues to be among the top 5o grossing games on iPad in the USA, which (as we have discussed in a recent article), could be worth around SEK 3.5m per quarter. Adding revenues from other countries and also iPhone (to a lesser extent), we believe the game alone could generate around SEK 10m per quarter at current performance levels. Today Secret Society is ranked #50 top grossing in the USA on iPad. It is also ranked #34 in Canada, #106 in Germany, #48 in France, #66 in South Korea, #49 in Russia, #64 in Italy and #88 in the UK.

Secret Society’s success clearly puts the less favourable development on Google Play in the shadow. G5 is still struggling to find a winning concept for Google Play and the fact that so far only one free-to-play game (Virtual City Playground) is released for that platform, certainly contributes to that problem. We hope management will soon address that issue. According to CEO Vlad Suglobov, G5 is working on several free-to-play games to be released across platforms.

——————————————————————————————

Apple has announced that 50 billion apps have now been downloaded from the App Store since the marketplace’s inception, with the milestone having been passed 58 months after launch. The total, which was conveniently hit right in the middle of rival Google’s I/O conference in San Francisco, has resulted in Apple publishing a flood of statistics about the App Store, with the marketplace now averaging 2 billion app downloads a month.

Apple also claimed that 800 apps are now being downloaded from the store every single second. “Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded,” said senior vice president of internet software and services Eddy Cue.

“The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.”

The stats suggest the App Store is no longer the sole driving force behind the industry, however. Just hours before, Google revealed that Google Play – just one of many Android app stores – has hit 48 billion app downloads, with 2.5 billion in the last month alone.

If you want to participate form the ever growing app market, make sure you’ll take a closer look at our top-pick G5 Entertainment.

#Glu Mobile: Ranking check

28 Apr

GluMobileLogoNewThis week’s ranking check for Glu Mobile shows a further decline in the number of games being among the top grossing charts in the major countries. This was the third week in a row with declining rankings on iOS as the games that have been released in Q1 2013 are losing more and more steam. Also on Google Play, the top grossing rankings are trending downwards.

Unfortunately, Frontline Commando D-Day is also sliding gradually in the top grossing list, albeit still being among the top 100 grossing iPad games in the most important countries.

Glu Mobile will present its Q1 2013 numbers on Wednesday, 1st of May after markets have closed. We’ll follow with interest what they have to say.

GluMobileLogoNewThis week’s ranking check for Glu Mobile shows that our recent observation continues to be true, i.e. that the company’s games are increasingly popular and generating revenue for the US mobile gaming company. Looking at the number of Glu Mobile games among the top grossing charts around the world, it appears that the company made a wise choice when it recruited Matt Ricchetti in order to improve its monetization strategy. Many of the games that were postponed during H2 2012, have now been launched during Q1 2013 and the download statistics look favourable so far.

#Apps: Android closing the gap to iOS

27 Mar

By Tero Kuittinen on www.forbes.com

“An interview of Craig Palli from Fiksu provided some fascinating figures about how the value of iPad, iPhone and Android smartphone application users is changing as the device owner profiles shift and usage patterns evolve. Fiksu is one of the best-known mobile advertising specialists, with a client roster including brands like VH1 and Hearst Magazines. One of the most interesting trends popping up in the conversation with Mr. Palli was that two years ago, an iPhone user was worth more than twice as much as an Android smartphone user in revenue generation. A year ago, that lead shrunk to iPhone users being 50% more valuable – and right now, if the app is designed specifically for Android and some segmentation is considered, the revenue generation potential is the same.

This change coincides with the leading Android smartphone vendor, Samsung, pulling decisively ahead of Apple in smartphone volume sales and Google‘s attempts to improve the Google Play user experience in order to attract more high-value customers. As the Android market has consolidated around Samsung, the splintering problem that has been plaguing the ecosystem has shrunk.

Interestingly, the revenue generation gap between iPad and iPhone has been narrowing as well. According to Fiksu’s statistics, iPad owner is currently worth 20% more than an iPhone owner. In some app categories, iPad and iPhone now generate the same amount of revenue per user; casino applications being one prominent example.

Fiksu states that the average time consumers owning a smartphone spend on mobile apps daily is now hitting a remarkable two hours a day, up 50% over just one year. This could go some way towards explaining the harrowing recent declines in video game software sales and prime time network television audiences. Having achieved critical mass in their home countries, mobile brands are increasingly exporting their apps to new countries, according to Mr. Palli. The big Asian players such as RenRen, Tencent, DeNA, Gree and others are investing significantly in the US markets.

The rise of Android application market value relative to iOS app market is setting up a fascinating clash between the Japanese/Korean app vendors that dominate the Android landscape and the US/EU vendors that dominate the iOS market. The ones that cross over more effectively and rapidly to their secondary mobile OS may well be the app market leaders circa 2015.”

newlogoThis week’s ranking check for G5 Entertainment is not showing any major change from last week. Top grossing rankings on iOS are at high levels while G5 continues to struggle on Google Play. The company has had a couple of weeks now without any major game releases. We know from recent comments from CEO Vlad Suglobov that the focus has more and more shifted towards high quality titles and preferably free-to-play games. These take by nature a longer time to develop but hopefully we will see some of them being launched in the near future. Also, G5 published several of its older iOS titles for Google Play at the beginning of 2013. The most important ones still to be converted to Google Play are Doomsday Preppers and Secret Society. These free-to-play titles have developed into nice cash-cows for G5 on iOS and we would love to see them on Google Play soon.

#Apps: The surprising numbers behind

11 Mar

Seen on Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com):

“How much time do people spend with apps? How much money does the average app developer make? The answers may surprise you.

Last week, the Journal began a new series about apps that examines the business strategies, identifies the winners and losers, and chronicles the seedier side of the industry.

“The Business of Apps” also uncovers the numbers behind the industry’s economics. Here’s a look back at some of the more interesting stats from last week’s stories:

First, the big money. The global apps business is expected to make $25 billion in revenue this year, up 62% from a year ago, according to Gartner. To put that in perspective, movie theaters sold less than half that dollar amount at the box office in 2012.

And we have a ton of apps to choose from: Apple’s store now has about 800,000 apps, compared with 700,000 on Google GOOG +0.52%Play, 125,000 on Windows and 70,000 for Amazon.

Yes, business is booming. But it’s also unpredictable. About 63% of the apps used daily now differ from those used daily a year ago. Our attention span is so short these days – and the competition is so fierce – that we soon move on to the latest and greatest app.

On average, we only focus on about eight apps at a time. And we use these apps more than you might think: The average smartphone user spends two hours a day with apps, more than double the time spent two years earlier, according to Flurry Analytics.

Where did we find all this free time? It’s hard to say exactly — if you look at the following graphic, the amount of time watching television and surfing the Web is flat in the past couple of years. Of course, we often have apps running in the background, like music-streaming apps, allowing us to multitask.

So consumption of apps is catching up to television viewing – some might say that’s a good thing, that apps are more productive than watching “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” But as the following graphic shows, productivity apps capture just 2% of our time. Rather, games are stealing the most of our attention – 43% of our time is spent catapulting angry birds at pigs and fighting monsters.

What are the top-performing apps? Apple says Disney’s DIS +0.23%99-cent “Temple Run: Oz” adventure game is currently the top paid app for its mobile devices, word game Icomania is the top free app and Supercell’s free medieval strategy game “Clash of Clans” is the top-grossing (thanks to in-app purchases).

Free remains king in app stores – most people aren’t willing to shell out money to buy an app, so developers are keen to find ways to show ads or entice with upgrades. But the prices are higher in the Apple store compared with Google’s, where the apps are far more likely to be free.

At the end of 2012, the average price paid for an app in the Apple store was $3.18 on an iPhone and $4.44 on an iPad, according to Distimo. That compares with an average price of $3.06 in the Google Play store. Those two stores represent about 87% of U.S. smartphone users, according to comScore.

Then there are the super-premium apps. The highest price for an app in Apple’s store is $999.99. According to Distimo, there were 30 such apps as of January, mostly software for specialized industries like piano tuners and anesthetics – though at least two of those apps are now free or $1.99, reflecting the constant shifting of business models.

That brings us to the developers. Tens of thousands of them have built nearly 1 million apps over the years. And they’ve earned more than $8 billion in payouts from Apple alone.

But the dirty secret is that most apps aren’t big hits. In fact, only 2% of the top 250 publishers in Apple’s store are “newcomers,” according to Distimo. The bulk of the app makers are factories like Electronic Arts EA +4.01%which can spit out dozens and have huge marketing budgets.

According to a survey of app developers by GigaOM Pro, 34% made less than $15,000 in income. A majority, 65%, make less than $35,000. And just 12% make more than $100,000. The average annual income among survey respondents: $45,000.

If developing your own app doesn’t sound appealing, you can always make money from those who do. Apps have spawned new jobs with people acting as couriers, offering taxi rides and selling clothes. WSJ quotes one man who makes $60,000 a year doing odd jobs requested through TaskRabbit. Another woman makes as much as $3,000 a month selling women’s clothing and accessories from home through Poshmark.”

Here’s what the average developer looks like:
