#G5 Entertainment: #Apple says December most successful month ever

While the tech community descends on Las Vegas for the first official day of CES, Apple’s hanging out in Cupertino crunching some year-end numbers.

And the totals look good for the technology giant.

Apple today announced that iPeople spent a whopping $10 billion on its App Store in 2013, with more than $1 billion coming in during the month of December alone. Customers downloaded nearly three million apps last month, which Apple calls the most successful month in App Store history. Also, aggregate payouts to Apple developers now top $15 billion.

While Google’s Android platform continues to gain traction in overall device shipments, many developers perceive the iOS crowd as a more profitable monetization target. Various studies back that up: iOS folks on average spent twice as much on Christmas Day as their Android counterparts, and Facebook ad profit is significantly higher on iOS than on Android. Apple’s trumpeting of sales and download numbers in the billion range will only help reinforce that perception.

Apple’s Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Internet software and services, commended the Apple community for helping the company reach new milestones.

We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” said Cue. “We look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”
